ACTIVITIES

Activities have often been referred to as the other half of education. Gethsemane Lutheran School endeavors to offer a variety of meaningful activities.

MUSIC: Vocal choirs are organized for students of PS - K, grades 1-2,3-4, and 5-8. Throughout the school year, the choirs take part in various musical activities including singing at a few of the Sunday morning worship services of Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

Students in grades PS-grade 4 have a regular classroom music curriculum taught by each classroom teacher. All students participate in a Christmas program each year. A Spring musical program will also be presented.

A band program will be available for interested students in grades 4-8. Parents will pay an additional fee for band instruction.

SCIENCE / SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR: Students in grades 4 - 8 will participate in either a Science or Social Studies Fair each year.

GEOGRAPHY BEE: Students in grades 5-8 will be invited to participate in a geography bee. The geography bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society in cooperation with the National Council of Social Studies Teachers.

FIELD TRIPS: Individual classes take field trips during the year. Parents may be asked to assist with transportation and pay a small fee for the trip.

SCOUTING PROGRAMS: Gethsemane Lutheran School sponsors scouting programs for both boys and girls. Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups will be available as long as enough students and adult leaders are interested.

ATHLETICS

In addition to the physical education activities required in the curriculum, Gethsemane Lutheran School offers students the opportunity to participate in a variety of after school athletics. Gethsemane Lutheran School is a member of the Black Canyon Athletic League along with eight other Lutheran schools in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The school sponsors competitive teams for boys and girls in grades 4-8. Practice periods for these teams are held after school. Specific practice and game schedules will be issued to parents of participating students just prior to the beginning of each sport's season. There are occasions when certain teams may have the opportunity to travel to a Lutheran School outside the Phoenix Metropolitan area.

The following is a list of sports currently available for students:

Boy's Sports: Basketball, Softball, Soccer, Track and Field, Cross Country.

Girl's Sports: Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, Track and Field, Cross Country.

Students in grades 4 - 8 are encouraged to participate in one or more athletic activities.
