Our Kindergarten program is centered around the children, taking each child where he/she is and helping him/her grow from there. It is vital to us that each child have a healthy self-image and feel good about himself/herself as a learner. While we do work on weaknesses, we minimize preoccupation with that and build on each child's strengths.
Learning more about God is the main focus of the year. Prayers, stories and songs are incorporated throughout the program. The children go to a chapel once a week.
We believe that immersing the children in print and literature in a fun, relaxed,un-pressured atmosphere is the best way for them to understand the purpose and need for reading and writing, and "break the code" of our language into literacy themselves. While the children study an alphabet letter each week, our language arts program revolves around the children reading and writing. We encourage them to write, thereby putting to use and strengthening their letter-sound knowledge, as well as their creativity. The children are also read to daily and encouraged to read books on their own. An Author's tea and literature studies are incorporated into the program.
The focus of our math program is on building concepts through using various hands-on materials. We feel it is essential that a child has a firm understanding of numbers and numberness before doing many pencil/paper activities.
Science and social studies are covered through units such as insects, the body, space and dinosaurs.
Music and crafts center on seasonal themes for the children to enjoy.
The Kindergarten class is scheduled for 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Their day includes outdoor playtime, as well as a rest period.
